If I am allergic to sulfonamides am I allergic to onions and garlic?

If you are allergic to sulfonamide, you are unlikely to react to sulfites in onions and garlic, and vice versa. Sulfonamide allergy is mediated by the immune system. Sulfite reactions occur because your body reacts to sulfur dioxide, a sulfite metabolite. Although people have sulfite reactions, it is not clear whether this is a real allergy or other reaction. Specific antibodies to sulfite allergy have not yet been determined.

Sulfonamides or sulfonamides are derivatives of a compound called p-aminobenzoic acid. Some antibiotics contain sulfonamides; these antibiotics are often called sulfonamides. Batrim and septra contain sulfamethoxazole, while erythromycin contains sulfamethoxazole. Azulfadin, which is used to treat Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis, contains sulfasalazine. Dapsone is another sulfonamide antibiotic used in leprosy, dermatitis and some pneumonia. There are other types of sulfonamides that are not antibiotics.

Allergic reaction

Your immune system protects you from viruses, bacteria and toxins. Food allergies occur because your body's immune system mistakenly recognizes that a substance is harmful. Your immune system produces antibodies and histamines, causing life-threatening symptoms such as rashes, measles, nausea, vomiting or an allergic reaction. Although the most common food allergies in children and adults are fish, peanuts, shellfish or nuts, they may also be allergic to other foods such as onions and garlic.

onions, garlic and sulphur contain sulphur, which makes them have unique flavor. When you cut onions, sulfur compounds can sting your eyes, and when onion tissues are cut, bitten or crushed, plants secrete sulfur compounds. The sulfur compounds in onions and garlic are called sulfites. According to Dr. Eric Block, author of Garlic and Other Garlic: Knowledge and Science, these highly irritating chemicals kill microorganisms and drive away insects; prolonged exposure to garlic can even blister the skin.

occurs when you are allergic to something and react to something similar or in the same food family. If you are allergic to crabs, you may also be allergic to prawns. If you are allergic to Bactrim or septra, you may also be allergic to erythromycin, because all drugs are sulfonamides. Sulfonamides and sulfites are different chemicals, and there is no cross-sensitivity between them.

Notes and Warnings

Allergic symptoms may be very unpleasant, and allergies may endanger life. If you have allergies, you should avoid harmful substances. If you are allergic to drugs or food, be sure to notify health care providers, but even if you are allergic to sulfonamides, you should be able to eat onions and garlic. If you have any questions or concerns about allergies, food or drugs, consult a medical professional.
